"Hello my name is Quince. You might recognize me from such roles as the forbidden fruit in the story of Adam and Eve. I've also made a few appearances in Greek mythology, Aphrodite considered me a sacred fruit. I was first cultivated in Mesopotamia but now am grown widely in warm climates all over the world. You can find me everywhere from Chile to Turkey, I even grow in Virginia."
This is one sexy fruit.
I'm thinking I'll eat this raw. If I love it too much hopefully I can find it later this week and make something sweeter from it. Something with honey to honor our Middle Eastern roots. Perhaps a jam like it they do in Syria.
"Nihao! Nice to meet you. I'm a Tatsoi. As you can see I am an unusual type of Chinese cabbage, but am increasingly popular in North America. I am very resilient and will grow under the snow. People say I remind them of my cousin the mustard plant but I think my rosettes really give me an unusual kind of beauty not found in other cabbages."
She is beautiful isn't she? Like an intricate lace work or a carefully designed labyrinth. Only Mother Nature could produce something so perfect and I will eat it. This is supposed to be a versatile green that will absorb any flavor you feed it making it very easy to cook. It can be eaten raw or cooked much like spinach. If this turns out to be something we like it could make a good alternative green for Thanksgiving dinner.
On a sadder note I found out that the Crispin apple is not going to be around this winter from Red Jacket Orchard. It is a favorite of ours and I wonder why it's gone. I'm sure we can find it from another apple grower in the city market though.
