Love the season

It started last year. James came home one day and declared " I am going to join a farm share." Now at first it seemed kind impossible like, what farm are you sharing and with whom? Despite what the signs say when you enter Brooklyn ( "You name it we got it") I was pretty sure that James wasn't going to be doing any farming. He was actually talking about a CSA or Community Supported Agriculture program.
The farm that we have a share in is Hearty Roots
I consider myself and James to be environmentally friendly, like a hybrid car or an energy star appliance. A happy balance of convenience ( I admit to driving to the grocery store on occasion) and environmentally anxious (always use a canvas bag and recycle everything possible). But a farm share? It seemed like a quick road to tofu and seaweed for dinner. I nodded as James explained how he would be investing in this farm and every week we would pick up our share of what they had grown. It al sounded risky, but off he went to invest in his farm.
At first I didn't know what to make of this arrangement, there I was standing in line picking up my crops. Somethings take getting used, and as we would trudge home with our weekly food supply I would wonder, What exactly is a kohlrabi? ( A broccoli apple) What am I supposed to do with one carrot and three turnips? ( Mash them) And fennel, seriously, fennel? ( Still waiting on that one)
We ended up with so much food and so many new recipes and flavors to experience that soon we found ourselves eating a new and delicious meal every Sunday with Brother. The cooking is almost all done by Chef James. So this blog is about our weekly share, what we get, and how they get eaten.

First pick up of the CSA season today....
Here is what we got:
Spinach
Arugula
Lettuce
Mixed Greens
Radish
Green Garlic
Bok choy

What's been eaten:
2 egg omelet ( eggs from the green market) with Spinach and tomato (B)
Big Salad of Lettuce, Mixed Greens, Arugula, Radishes, avocado, homemade croutons, lemon juice, olive oil and and a lil s+p and ( J)

I can't wait for Sunday dinner.
