Citrullus Lanatus

James went out to walk Pig and when he came back he said he saw people walking back from the market and that he was so excited and that we had to go at that minute. There is a time in the morning when the greenmarket in McCarren Park is calm. The early crowd of old Polish women has receded and the stroller crowd isn't there yet. That is the perfect time to do our shopping. When I got in there the first thing I saw was a huge crate of blueberries from Red Jacket Orchard in upstate NY. Out of the 9 vendors in high season Red Jacket and RonneyBrook Dairy are there for us year round. Anyway we joked that I wanted the crate of berries, but it was no joke to me. We bought two pints of blueberries and a dozen or so apricots. We also bought celery, carrots, tomatoes, onions, green beans, bread, striped bass ( it was so expensive I'm embarrassed), milk, eggs, peaches, nectarines, watermelon (!!!!) and zinnia flowers. From the CSA we picked up a red cabbage, summer squashes, marjorum, carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, and mizuna.

The arrival of watermelon is another milestone in the summer season. Its pink sugar juices splash all around the kitchen. Pig takes on the role of donkey by eating the white parts we throw to the ground. James and I become professional seed spitters. After the blueberry, it is my favorite fruit. We have a lot of food to finish before Thursday when we leave for Indianapolis. Check out what James made from the watermelon.

James is so talented.

The stir fry was really great last night, by the way. Really fresh vegetables make such a difference.

I have quite a challenge in front of me tomorrow. I have to cook a dinner that will meet the expectations of Brother and Liz. I think with my fish and eggplants though I should be able to put something different and unexpected together. I should start preparing my menu now!
