Christmas

Chef jumped out of bed at 8:30 am on Saturday so he could have fresh pick at the Union Square Market. His goal was meat and vegetables and apples for Christmas meals. Fresh picks it was, Chef came home with 4 out of 8 of the lamb shanks in the entire U.Sq Mrkt. He also bought:

butternut squash
mushrooms
apples
bean sprouts
pea shoot
brussell sprouts
garlic
onion
red flesh and russet potatoes
carrots
celery

For Christmas Eve dinner chef prepared a meal fit for the day before baby Jebus was born. Lamb shanks served over mashed potatoes (they were pink!). He also baked a no-knead bread.

The lamb shanks were so tender they just fell into pieces with the touch of a fork. On the side a salad of shoots and leaves. It was a thoughtful meal, unexpected in so many ways, making it so much more special then an average Christmas Eve dinner. Again, Chef outdoes himself. Just look at this presentation.

For dessert-the oozing sweetness of apple pie. Look at the gooey goodness seeping out from between the apple slices.

that is a damned sexy hunk of pie. what did james think of cooks illustrated reprinting and "improving" the nytimes no-knead bread recipe? i think the recipe no-kneaded revision.
