I recall one Saturday morning in August when I felt it too cold. I wore a scarf and a sweatshirt only to be mocked by my "boyfriends" at the market. That day I bought almost everything at the market for fear the growing season would suddenly suffer a crippling frost thereby damaging all the crops. I now realize that on that Saturday I was more crazy then usual, and that today is actually the kind of day I feared for. The kind of day that kills plants, old people, and small domesticated animals. The Pig still lives.
Perhaps it isn't that cold today and in February I will look back on today and repeat what I have just said. There will be no more vegetables soon, only milk, meat, and apples. Today is the kind of day you put on all your cashmere sweaters and head out seemingly wrapped up in warmth but return with frozen toes, and chilled to your core. The two greatest things that frozen ever gave are the two best ways to melt that internal freeze. Soup and hot apple cider.
From the farmers market I bought:
Milk
Eggs
Chicken
Apples
Sweet Potatoes
A Bouquet of Kale- it is huge and looked like the healthiest produce around.
Cilantro
Parsley
Bread
Red Jacket Orchard even had tomatoes but they were really expensive and honestly I don't know how they grew them in the Finger Lakes this time of year. Not that I can grow a tomato. As far as I understand though tomato season is over and I try to avoid the greenhouse ones. Those greenhouses use a lot of energy to produce one tomato.
I also got a boiling cup of spicy apple cider and it was soooooo good. I burned all my taste buds off being too eager for that first sip.
Now for that soup. I have a recipe for Moroccan Chickpea Soup that I make as soon as it is cold like today. Soon I will have the apartment smelling like a Medina. Or in the very least it will be very fragrant.
