Dirty Dreams

I was a volunteer at the CSA today. That means helping set up the tent, unpacking the crates, taste testing the vegetables (maybe that was just me). When I got there I was surprised to find a film crew there.

Turns out they are filming a documentary titled Dirt based on the book Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth.

The movie travels the world examining the wonders of dirt and how it ties us all together. How even in the most unnatural place like Brooklyn dirt plays an important and nessacery role in connecting us to the earth through our bodies.

I am always amazed to find that people are thinking about the same things at the same time. A person here has the same idea as a person half way around the world. It is something shared in the most instinctual way among unrelated peoples and it is mind blowing. Which is why I was so pleased to talk to the producers of this movie because some of what they are exploring is some of what I am exploring in my own life. The movement to grow your own, or in my case eating fresher and more locally sourced foods, and just being a cleaner simpler member of the world has become something that more people are taking notice of. I'm not talking about this "Green" marketing frenzy that promotes MORE consumption instead of less as it should be. I am referring to the folks like us who do the little we can to make ourselves, and if we are lucky, our neighbors lives a little better.
Another example of the intertwined minds is the new breed of guerilla gardeners like myself. I didn't know this was so widespread until this NY Times article.

The movie will be out in April or May and I'll be interested to see if I made the cut. My dreams of being a movie star may come true after all. I'm totally making my IMDB profile this weekend.

So back to the point of all this- the food. Thank you to the farmers for hooking us up with:

I ate a turnip at the suggestion of Farmer Danny and I have to say he was right- they taste great raw. Sweet with a peppery kick. It was divine. The after taste was really splendid and stuck around for a while too. These would make a good snack on a hot day as they are cooling and watery.

Beets are back and I'm looking forward to eating too many of them until I can hardly stand the sight of them anymore.

With the cabbages I'll make dolma which I will share with your later.

James went to the farmers market and bought some righteous strawberries and cherries. I love the summer. I just feel like a better version of myself.
